The author examined all of
the OS 6 inch maps of Ireland circa 1850 and the Valuation Office Mill Books,
and noted all of the details of anything that was worked by water-power. It
contains an index of Millers and Mill-owners, an index of mill-workers and an
index of Townland names (many of which have fallen from general use). It also
has 12 black and white archive photos and 20 colour photos of surviving mills.
The list of mills by county,
townland/parish includes – type of mill, diameter of water wheel, breadth of
buckets, fall of water, number of stones, number of men employed, number of
hours the mill was daily employed and the valuation of the water power. Also,
there are descriptions of the mill and the business.. There is also a collection
of local mill histories.
To anyone interested in the
milling industry of Ireland it must be amazing
to have such a wealth of information presented so easily, however it is not a
book for the general reader. But, this is
definitely a book for genealogists and 'mill-nuts'!
